What it is
IPL pigmentation treatment uses a Lynton platform set to target melanin. Light energy is absorbed by pigment in a sun spot or patch of uneven tone. Treated pigment commonly darkens before the area fades over the following days. Your practitioner will explain the expected response and when a mark should instead be assessed by a GP.
This is pigmentation removal in Bristol for areas of diffuse colour, rather than a treatment for one individual raised lesion. The same Lynton platform is used for IPL thread veins, which targets vascular marks instead.
What it treats, and what it does not
Age spots, liver spots and sun damage can respond well to IPL, particularly on the face, chest and backs of the hands. It can also help an uneven skin tone where UV exposure has left several areas darker than the surrounding skin.
Melasma is different. It has a hormonal driver, and light-based treatment can sometimes make it worse. Tell your therapist if you think you have melasma so the consultation can steer you towards something more appropriate.
One raised spot or a skin tag is a different job. For a single raised spot, ask about CryoPen instead. IPL is the better fit when the concern is spread across an area.
What to expect
Your therapist will assess the area and carry out the required consultation and patch test before treatment. During the appointment, the Lynton IPL is applied to the agreed area.
Treated spots usually darken before they fade. They then lift and flake away over roughly a week. That temporary darkening is expected, but changing or bleeding marks should be checked by a GP first rather than treated cosmetically.
Sun protection afterwards is not optional. Treated skin is more vulnerable to UV, and further sun exposure can bring the pigmentation back.
Sessions and prices
The consultation and patch test cost £32. This is required and redeemable against treatment. Treatment prices depend on the size of the area, as shown in the price list below.
Small areas may be an individual patch on the face. Medium and large areas can cover broader sections such as the face, chest or backs of the hands. Your therapist will confirm the appropriate area size before you book the treatment.
Where to have IPL pigmentation treatment in Bristol
This treatment is available at all three salons. Skin & Beauty Box has three salons across north-west Bristol: Clifton Down, Westbury on Trym and Westbury Park on Coldharbour Road. IPL pigmentation treatment runs at every one of them.
Beauty-side salon therapists are NVQ Level 3 qualified. They will discuss the marks you want treated, check whether IPL is suitable and explain what to expect before taking you through the price for your area.
