Laser and IPL in Bristol

IPL sends pulses of light into the follicle, where the pigment absorbs the energy. It suits large areas and dark hair, over eight to ten sessions four to eight weeks apart, and gives long-term reduction rather than permanent removal. Electrolysis slides a probe into each follicle one at a time. It is the only genuinely permanent method and it does not care about hair colour or skin tone, which makes it the answer for grey, white, red and very fair hair. The trade-off is time, so it suits small defined areas and is impractical for full legs.

We use Lynton IPL, a British manufacturer whose systems are used in NHS settings. IPL runs at Clifton and Westbury on Trym, electrolysis at Westbury on Trym only.

It gives long-term reduction, not guaranteed permanent removal, and occasional maintenance is normal. For permanent removal on a small area, book electrolysis at Westbury on Trym.

• Do not pluck or wax. The light needs a hair in the follicle. Shaving is fine.
• Keep the area out of the sun and use protection. A tan changes how skin responds.
• Not suitable around the eyes or over tattoos.
