What skin boosters are

Skin boosters are not fillers and they are not anti-wrinkle injections. They do not add volume or stop muscles moving. Instead they work on the skin itself: hydration, elasticity and that quality people describe as looking well.

They are injected in a series of small deposits just under the skin, where they spread out rather than sitting in one place. The mechanism differs by product (hyaluronic acid for Profhilo and Seventy Hyal, polynucleotides for Lumi Eyes), but the outcome is the same: better skin quality, not a different shape.

Profhilo, Seventy Hyal or Lumi Eyes: which one?

All three are injectable skin boosters, but they are not interchangeable. Which one suits you depends on your skin, the area you want to treat and what you are trying to fix, which is why it is talked through at consultation rather than picked off a list.

Profhilo

Profhilo is a hyaluronic acid treatment that spreads out under the skin instead of staying where it is placed, hydrating from within and stimulating collagen and elastin as it goes. It treats the face, neck, chest and hands. The standard course is two sessions four weeks apart, with results lasting up to six months for most people, followed by one or two maintenance treatments a year.

Seventy Hyal

Seventy Hyal is another hyaluronic acid based skin booster, offered as an alternative to Profhilo. Which of the two suits you is a judgement your practitioner makes on your skin, not a ranking of the products.

Lumi Eyes

Lumi Eyes uses polynucleotides rather than hyaluronic acid, and is built for the delicate skin under the eyes rather than the face as a whole. The next section covers how it works and when we recommend it.

Lumi Eyes for the under-eye area

Lumi Eyes is an under eye treatment that uses polynucleotides to target the delicate skin below the eye, where dark circles, fine lines and dehydration show first and respond poorly to almost everything else.

We treat the under-eye with polynucleotides rather than tear trough filler. Filler adds volume under the eye to fill a hollow, which works well for some people but can look heavy or shift over time in skin this thin. Polynucleotides do not add volume: they work on skin quality instead, hydration, texture and fine lines, which suits the under-eye area better in most of the cases we see. If what you actually need is volume in a hollow rather than better skin quality, we will say so and talk through whether filler is the better fit rather than treat you with Lumi Eyes anyway.

A session takes around 30 minutes. Three treatments at two-week intervals is the usual course, though the exact number depends on what you are starting with. Maintenance sessions keep the result going.

Who they suit

Profhilo is generally recommended from around age 30, which is roughly when collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid start declining meaningfully. That is a guide, not a rule: there is no upper age limit, and plenty of people start later and still see a real difference.

What matters more than your age is your skin and what you want from it. If you are not sure whether a skin booster is the right call at 60, or at 25, ask at the consultation. We will tell you honestly if something else would serve you better.

What they cost in Bristol

Skin boosters at Skin & Beauty Box start at £150 for a single Lumi Eyes session and run to £400 for a full Profhilo course. That is the total for the number of sessions in a standard course, not a per-visit add-on on top of it. Prices vary a little by salon and therapist, and booking online shows the exact price for your chosen salon before you confirm. If you are weighing cost against a cheaper option, ask about it at consultation: we would rather tell you what actually suits your skin and your budget than upsell the more expensive product.

Before and after Lumi Eyes

Do not stop prescribed anticoagulants, antiplatelets or other medicines before treatment unless the prescriber who manages them tells you to. At consultation, tell your practitioner about every medicine and supplement you take. They will give you personalised advice about bruising, treatment suitability and aftercare. Mild bruising, redness or temporary swelling can occur after injectable treatment.

Afterwards, no makeup for 24 hours, SPF 30 or higher daily for at least two weeks, and avoid saunas, swimming, direct heat and vigorous exercise for seven days. Leave facials, dermaplaning, peels and IPL for at least a fortnight.

When it is not suitable

These checks are for Lumi Eyes specifically, but the same kind of check applies whichever product you are having. Your practitioner runs through it at consultation regardless.

Lumi Eyes is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, currently unwell or on a course of antibiotics, taking permanent blood-thinning medication, or living with severe kidney or liver conditions.

Tell your practitioner about any medication and any condition at the consultation, including things that feel irrelevant. They are frequently the ones that matter.

Common questions

How is this different from filler?

Dermal fillers add volume in one place: a specific area, a specific shape. A skin booster spreads through the skin instead, improving its hydration and quality without changing your facial structure. They solve different problems and are often used together.

How soon will I see a difference?

Skin quality changes build over the weeks following treatment as hydration improves and collagen responds. For Lumi Eyes, many people notice an improvement after the first session.

Is Profhilo actually worth it?

That depends on what you want. Profhilo improves skin hydration and quality rather than changing your shape, so if you are after visible lift or volume, a filler or a different treatment is a better fit. If what you want is skin that looks less tired and more hydrated over a course of months, most people who try it are glad they did. Ask at consultation and we will tell you honestly whether it suits what you are after before you book.

What are the downsides of Profhilo?

It is an injectable, so there is a needle, mild bruising or swelling is common, and results build gradually rather than giving an instant change. It also is not permanent: most people need one or two maintenance sessions a year to keep the result going, which is an ongoing cost rather than a one-off. If you want a single treatment with a dramatic, lasting result, Profhilo is not that.

How much should Profhilo cost?

At Skin & Beauty Box, a single Profhilo session is £220 and the standard two-session course is £400. Price varies a little by salon and by therapist, and you will see the exact figure for your chosen salon when you book online. Be cautious of prices that look unusually low: it is a medical injectable, and cost usually reflects the training and product behind it.

Is 60 too old for Profhilo?

No. There is no upper age limit: it is about your skin and what you want from it, not a number. Plenty of people start Profhilo well past 60 and see a real improvement in hydration and texture. Come in for a consultation and we will tell you honestly whether it is the right fit.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Profhilo?

If budget is the main issue, HydraFacial is a facial-tier option from £100 that improves hydration and glow without being an injectable, though it is only available at our Clifton Down salon. It will not do what Profhilo or Lumi Eyes do for deeper skin quality and elasticity, but it is a genuine lower-cost route if that is what you need right now. A single Lumi Eyes session, rather than the three-session course, is also a cheaper way into the injectable route itself.

How is it different from anti-wrinkle injections?

Anti-wrinkle treatments relax the muscles that cause expression lines, so the skin above them creases less as you move. A skin booster does not touch muscle movement at all: it works on the skin’s hydration and quality instead. They are not substitutes for each other, and a lot of people have both, one for movement, the other for skin quality.
